Are you using products that are toxic?

The other day I went to one of my favorite bistros to get some breakfast. A group of 4 girls came in and sat at the table next to me. Within just a few minutes I could tell that one or more of these girls was wearing a very toxic product due to my throat closing up and the fragrances were overwhelming. Clearly they didn't check the labels on what they were using so here are some guide lines for what NOT to use no matter how good you think it smells......

Toxic skincare products often contain ingredients like parabens, phthalates, sulfates, formaldehyde, synthetic fragrances, oxybenzone, and mineral oil. These chemicals are linked to potential health concerns such as skin irritation, hormone disruption, and even cancer. To identify toxic skincare, look for these ingredients on the label and prioritize "free-from" products that list natural or alternative ingredients.

Common Toxic Ingredients to Avoid

  • Parabens:

Preservatives that can be found in many personal care products, they have been linked to endocrine disruption and skin irritation.

  • Sulfates (e.g., Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/SLS):

Used as foaming agents, they can be harsh and cause dryness and irritation, especially for sensitive skin.

  • Phthalates:

Plasticizing chemicals that can be found in various cosmetics and personal care items, they are considered endocrine disruptors that may affect reproductive health.

  • Formaldehyde:

A known carcinogen often used as a preservative, it can also be found as "formaldehyde-releasing preservatives" (FRPs).

  • Synthetic Fragrances:

Companies don't have to disclose their fragrance ingredients, but these can be complex mixtures containing chemicals that cause allergies.

  • Oxybenzone:

A chemical used in sunscreens and other products, it has been linked to endocrine disruption.

  • Mineral Oil & Petrolatum:

These petroleum-derived ingredients can trap the skin and cause dryness, and may contain contaminants like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

  • Polyethylene Glycols (PEGs):

Used as a thickening agent in lotions and shampoos, PEGs can increase the skin's ability to absorb other chemicals.

How to Identify and Avoid Toxic Products

  • Read Ingredient Labels:

Check the product's ingredient list and avoid products containing the chemicals mentioned above.

  • Look for "Free-From" Labels:

Choose products that are labeled as "paraben-free," "sulfate-free," or "fragrance-free".

  • Research Ingredients:

Use resources like the Environmental Working Group (EWG) or the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to learn more about specific ingredients.

  • Consider Natural Alternatives:

Look for products made with plant-based ingredients and alternative preservatives.
